WHY RMC

Why RMC

Dr Visvesvarayya, revered in India as father of civil engineering, once said, "Construction system has to get into the practice of using the maximum out of the performance that the concrete has to offer. While they start using the maximum advantage, then they will find RMC the best.

What is in-situ concrete?

It is a concrete prepared at site, either by hand mixing or in a mechanical mixer and carried to the location of casting by head loads. Ingredients are mixed by volume in pre defined proportions.

What is Ready Mix Concrete?

As the name suggest it is ready to use concrete, prepared in a computerized weigh batching plant, delivered to the customer at site in Transit Mixers and mechanically pumped to the desired location of casting. Ingredients are measured by weight, as per mix design prepared by qualified engineers.

How it is different from the in-situ concrete?

Ready mix concrete is a customized material produced by trained manpower under controlled conditions. It is designed to meet the immediate as well long term technical requirements of the structure. The ingredients are tested for their physical and chemical properties in a laboratory before they are used. The quantity of ingredients is determined through trial mixes prepared in a laboratory, with available ingredients.

The fresh as well as hardened concrete are tested in an in house lab as per Bureau of Indian Standards, before commencement of production. The ingredients are weighed by automatic sensors to a high level of precision. No aspect of RMC is indeed left to human discretion and guesswork.

Why Should RMC is preferred over in-situ concrete?

In-situ concrete is prepared by unskilled labour under highly chaotic conditions. Crude devices, such as Jhalli/tasla/peti are used to measure the volumetric proportions of the ingredients. In the chaos that prevails at site during the casting the mix proportions are left to the discretion of labour and the quality of concrete is determined by guesswork.

Whereas RMC is a designed industrial product with highly reliable quality, in-situ concrete is a product of compromises and its strength subject to blind faith.

RMC is popular worldwide, because it offers tremendous advantage as listed below

  • Quality of Raw material is assured.
  • Quality of required grade of concrete is assured and it is backed by certification.
  • Mix is consistent and homogenous
  • Water: Cement ratio, the most important parameter, is computer controlled.
  • The process ensures that no segregation of ingredients takes place at any stage, from mixing to pouring and finishing.
  • Environment friendly as it eliminates the noise and dust pollution at site.
  • Mix is designed to meet technical requirements of fresh as well as hardened concrete, such as workability, strength, durability, impermeability, optimum density and long term satisfactory performance under aggressive environment.
  • Saves wastage of raw materials
  • Need for storage of raw materials at site is eliminated.
  • Need for of large contingent of labour for production and casting of concrete is eliminated.
  • Construction joints in casting are totally eliminated since large volumes can be handled in a short span of time.
  • A variety of admixtures are used to improve short and long term performance of concrete.

What prevents its popularity in second tier cities

  • Lack of awareness in professional s in customers about the advantages of RMC
  • Non inclusion of RMC as a mandatory item in the BOQ of building road contracts
  • Taxes on RMC that make it marginally expensive commodity than in situ concrete.
  • Traffic restrictions on entry of RMC carriers, especially in daytime.
  • Cost intensive plant & equipments for production, carriage and pumping of concrete.
  • Very Short shelf life.

Vishnu Hari Concrete (Pvt) RMC Ltd. Is committed to change the age old practice of making concrete and develop the quality consciousness among architects, builders and engineers.
